welcome to me blog ‘n’ all that jazz

by Maddie

This blog has taken me a solid 2 years (and a few other months, maybs) to finally get up and running. Which is why it feels super strange to be sitting here in me lil uni room (little being the operative word) writing up this very first post.

As you can see, actual floor space is to a minimum, which makes for navigating round my desk past me bed very interesting

At least I’ve got fairy lights to make everything more bearable tho

The reason it’s taken me so long? I’ve had the inkling to set up a blog for years now, but the idea first came into fruition (well, kinda lol) in the summer of 2015, when I had just finished my first year of A Levels. I spent the summer trawling the internet, getting super excited at what other bloggers were achieving with their sites, and yearning for a place where people could go and read musings/rants/articles that I’d written. I’ve genuinely loved writing for as long as I can remember and throughout school my favourite subjects were always creative: English, Music and Drama.

So, in the summer of 2015, I went ahead and purchased me own domain and had a look for a customised theme online that would really fit my content and style. With the help of my friend Dan (aka computer whizz/technical genius) we set up what was to become Madeleine Mae.

Then the second year of A Levels started, and with that came stress, UCAS, more stress, coursework, exams and even more stress. Along with an (un)healthy dash of procrastination, my blog sat dormant on the vast expanse of the internet for a long old while. Apart from a couple test posts and quite a few views from the Ukraine as Dan told me (I don’t know why or how) nothing really got going on the blog.

I’m now currently in my first year at the University of Birmingham, studying English & Creative Writing (what a surprise, eh) and am about to finish my very first semester at university. Time has sped by me and I’m really not okay with that. Like seriously, how is it already nearly December? It’s terrifying.

Old Joe (the clock tower) is v beaut, but legend has it that if you walk under him as the bells are ringing, you’ll fail your degree. There’s some pointless UoB trivia for you all, no need to thank me.

The realisation that a career in Journalism is something that I’m really interested in, alongside wanting something fun to do aside from essays and reading classical poetry for the next 3, tedious years, has spurred me on to FINALLY get Madeleine Mae up and running. Oh, and of course inspirational quotes on Instagram are to thank for my motivation, because you’re not really a millennial if that isn’t the case.

So, that’s basically it! Here I am! In case the title of me blog wasn’t exactly obvious enough, my name is Madeleine. I’m 19 years old and I’m passionate about writing, standing up for what you believe in and trying to spread as much kindness and positivity as you possibly can. I want this blog to be an escape for you (just as it’s an escape for me from the dull realities of university life). I want you to find light-hearted posts that entertain you, alongside posts that inspire you and above all, I want this blog to be a positive lil place on the endless black hole of information that is the internet.

Dis be me, feelin’ very awkward about having to pose for a photo, you’re welcome

I post twice a week (on a Wednesday and Sunday) purely because Sunday is chill day and writing a post distracts me from the horror that tomorrow is in fact another Monday, and imma hoping a cheeky post on a Wednesday will help you get over that mid-week hump. I’m aiming to post anything and everything from fashion (because I love me some clothes) to travel pieces whenever I hit the road (which will not be that often sadly, being a full-time student living off frozen pizzas and baked beans and spending my money on irrelevant things like clothes instead of decent food). Other posts will include some covers or original songs in the music section of me site, to my favourites of the month in the Spotlight category- where I place a ‘metaphorical spotlight’ on the things I’ve been loving- can you tell I’m an English student?

So please have a read if you fancy! I’m very excited to get started – 17-year-old me would be givin’ me a high-five, if that was possible.
